When to desex your pet?
At Moreton Bay Vets, we recommend desexing dogs from 1-2 years of age (depending on the breed).

In our feline companions, we recommend desexing from when the cat is over 1kg.

Why later?
Here at Moreton Bay Vets we want what’s best for your pet and that means staying on top of recent veterinary research. Most recent veterinary studies have shown positive outcomes when castrating or speying at a later age. It allows their bones to develop and mature more appropriately to support a healthy life.

Pre-Surgical Examinations & Bloods
To ensure the health and safety of your pet, we recommend blood work and a physical exam be done on your pet prior to booking surgery to ensure that they are healthy and have no underlying health problems.

Spey - What is it?

Speying is a surgical procedure that removes all of the reproductive organs in a female. It is commonly known as a ovariohysterectomy, where the uterus and both ovaries are removed. This procedure eliminates the female’s ability to go into heat and reproduce. After putting your pet under general anaesthesia, our veterinarians make an incision in the abdomen in order to remove the reproductive organs.
