The only item not included is post-operative sedation, which may be required. If sedation is recommended for your pet’s comfort or safety at home, we’re happy to provide an individual estimate.

What is Limb Amputation?

Limb amputation is the surgical removal of a leg, either partially (at or below a joint) or completely (from the shoulder or hip). It may involve a forelimb or hindlimb, depending on the condition being treated. While this may sound extreme, it can often dramatically improve a pet’s quality of life—especially if the limb is painful, non-functional, or affected by disease.

Why is Amputation Recommended?

We may recommend limb amputation in cases such as:

• Bone cancer (osteosarcoma)

• Severe trauma or fractures that cannot be repaired

• Infection or necrosis unresponsive to treatment

• Nerve damage or paralysis of the limb

• Congenital deformities causing chronic pain or disability

• Non-healing wounds or ulcers affecting quality of life

In many of these cases, the limb is already causing chronic pain or functional impairment. Amputation not only removes the source of pain but allows the pet to recover and thrive without it.

What to Expect: From Consultation to Recovery

1. The Initial Consultation

During your visit, the veterinarian will:

• Review your pet’s history and current condition

• Perform a full physical exam and mobility assessment

• Discuss diagnostic imaging (such as X-rays or ultrasound) to confirm the cause and evaluate for underlying issues

• Recommend pre-anaesthetic blood testing to assess your pet’s overall health

We’ll take the time to answer all your questions and discuss the risks, benefits, and long-term outlook for your pet. If amputation is the best course of action, we will work with you to plan the procedure and recovery with confidence and care.

2. Surgical Admission

On the day of surgery:

• Your pet will be admitted in the morning after fasting overnight

• We may conduct pre-op blood work using our in-house laboratory to ensure your pet is ready for anesthesia

• Pain relief and IV fluids will be administered, and your pet will be placed under general anesthesia

• The limb will be surgically removed with great care, followed by closure of the surgical site and a tailored pain management plan

3. Post-Operative Care and Recovery

Most pets adapt to life on three legs within days to weeks. Here’s what you can expect after surgery:

• Hospital stay: Most pets stay overnight for monitoring and pain control

• Medication: Pain relief, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics will be sent home as required

• Restricted activity: Your pet will need to rest for 10–14 days. Movement should be limited until sutures are removed and healing is confirmed

• Suture removal: A follow-up visit will be scheduled around 10–14 days after surgery

• Support and mobility aids: In some cases, we may recommend a harness or sling to assist your pet during the initial recovery period

• Emotional adjustment: While some pets are initially unsure, most regain confidence quickly and resume normal activities, often with greater ease than before the surgery
