The only item not included is post-operative sedation, which may be required. If sedation is recommended for your pet’s comfort or safety at home, we’re happy to provide an individual estimate.

Entropion is a common eye condition in dogs (and occasionally cats) where the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes or skin to rub against the surface of the eye. This leads to chronic irritation, discomfort, and potential damage to the cornea.

What Is Entropion and Why Is Surgery Recommended?

Entropion can affect one or both eyes and may involve the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both. It may be:

• Congenital (present from birth), often seen in breeds like Shar Peis, Bulldogs, Retrievers, and Rottweilers

• Acquired, due to scarring, weight loss, or muscle weakness (more common in older pets)

When left untreated, entropion can cause:

• Corneal ulcers, infections, or scarring

• Squinting or rubbing at the eyes

Surgery is the only definitive treatment. The goal is to restore the normal position of the eyelid, so the lashes and skin no longer touch or damage the eye.

What to Expect: From Consultation to Recovery

1. Initial Consultation

At your pet’s initial appointment, we will:

• Perform a full physical and ophthalmic (eye) examination

• Assess the degree of eyelid rolling, eye irritation, and any corneal damage

• Use fluorescein dye if needed to check for ulcers

• Evaluate whether the condition is congenital, breed-related, or secondary to another issue

We’ll discuss whether entropion surgery is recommended and whether any temporary treatments (like antibiotic eye drops or temporary eyelid tacking) are needed before surgery.

2. Surgical Admission

On the day of surgery:

• Your pet will be admitted in the morning after overnight fasting

• Pre-anaesthetic blood tests may be run to ensure your pet is safe for anesthesia

• Your pet will be placed under general anesthesia, with IV fluids and full monitoring

• The surgeon will remove a small section of skin near the eyelid margin to roll the eyelid back into the correct position

• In some cases, temporary sutures may be used initially in growing puppies or if the cause is expected to improve over time

The surgery typically takes 30–60 minutes per eye and is tailored to your pet’s specific needs.

3. Post-Surgical Care and Recovery

After surgery, your pet will go home the same day (or occasionally the next day) with:

• Pain relief and anti-inflammatory medication

• Topical antibiotic eye drops or ointment

• An Elizabethan collar (cone) to prevent rubbing or scratching

• Detailed instructions on how to care for the eyes and surgical site

A follow-up visit will be scheduled in 10–14 days to check healing and remove any sutures.

Mild swelling and bruising around the eyes is normal and temporary. Most pets show immediate relief from the discomfort and stop squinting or rubbing within a few days.
