What to Expect: From Consultation to Recovery

Initial Examination

Once a problem tooth is identified, we’ll discuss whether extraction is necessary and outline the surgical approach.

On the Day of the Extraction

• Your horse will be admitted to the clinic and sedated for the procedure

• The affected tooth will be extracted using appropriate techniques (oral, sectioning, or surgical)

• Pain relief, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics will be administered as needed

• The site will be cleaned and packed if required to prevent infection

Some extractions are straightforward and completed quickly, while others—particularly cheek teeth—can be more complex and time-consuming.

Aftercare and Recovery

After the extraction, your horse may need:

• A short stay at our practice for monitoring

• Softened feed for a few days to ease chewing

• Rinsing or flushing of the socket at home (we will demonstrate how)

• Follow-up visits to check healing and remove packing if used
