We’ve designed our pricing to be transparent, affordable, and all-inclusive—so you’re not caught off guard by unexpected costs later. Our surgical bundle includes:

      ✅ Take-home medications directly related to the procedure (e.g., pain relief, antibiotics)

      ✅ Day 3-4 Post Operative recheck and crepe bandage removal 

Excludes: Vaccinations (which is required if your horse has not received a complete course of tetanus & strangles or is not up to date with their vaccines) and Hospitilisation (Horses are generally hospitilised at our clinic for 3 days post surgery).

Eye enucleation is the surgical removal of an eye, most commonly performed when a horse is suffering from severe or untreatable eye disease. While the idea of eye removal can be concerning for owners, it is often the kindest and most effective option to relieve chronic pain and prevent ongoing complications. Horses adapt remarkably well to life with one eye and typically return to normal activity, comfort, and confidence following recovery.

We provide safe, professional equine eye enucleation procedures in a fully equipped environment. The surgery is performed in-clinic only, using our purpose-built equine yards, secure stables, and veterinary crush to ensure the safety and comfort of both the horse and our veterinary team.

Why Would a Horse Need Eye Enucleation?

Enucleation is considered when the eye is:

• Blind and painful

• Suffering from severe trauma or rupture

• Affected by advanced glaucoma or uveitis

• Infected or at risk due to ocular tumours (e.g. squamous cell carcinoma)

• Damaged beyond recovery from chronic ulcers or abscesses

In these cases, removing the eye eliminates ongoing pain and risk of infection, offering the horse a better quality of life. Most horses recover fully and quickly adapt to monocular (single-eye) vision, especially when they’ve already lost sight in the affected eye.

Due to the need for sterile technique, controlled sedation or general anaesthesia, and specialised equipment, all equine eye removal surgeries are performed at our clinic.

What to Expect: Consultation to Recovery

1. Initial Consultation

We begin with a comprehensive eye examination, which may include:

• Ophthalmic assessment

• Fluorescein staining (to check for corneal ulcers)

We’ll explain all treatment options and discuss whether enucleation is the best course of action for your horse.

This initial consultation is not included in the Equine Enucleation price.

2. Surgery Day

• Your horse will be admitted to the clinic and settled into our safe, purpose-built equine facilities

• Sedation or general anaesthesia will be administered depending on the case

• The eye will be carefully removed, and the eyelids closed to create a clean, healed appearance

• Pain relief, antibiotics, and careful post-operative monitoring will be provided

3. Post-Operative Care

After surgery, your horse may need to stay with us for short-term observation. Once home, post-operative care typically includes:

• Rest and reduced activity for a few days

• A clean, dry environment

• Oral or injectable medications as prescribed

• Monitoring for swelling, discharge, or signs of discomfort

• A recheck appointment within 10–14 days

Most horses adjust rapidly, and many owners report their horse is more comfortable, relaxed, and happy without the painful eye.
