The only item not included is post-operative sedation, which may be required. If sedation is recommended for your pet’s comfort or safety at home, we’re happy to provide an individual estimate.

A fracture is a break or crack in a bone, typically caused by trauma such as being hit by a car, falling from a height, or getting a limb caught or twisted. In some cases, fractures can also result from bone disease or weakness (pathological fractures). Regardless of the cause, a broken bone can be extremely painful and must be treated promptly to ensure proper healing and restore full function.

When is Fracture Repair Surgery Recommended?

Surgery is generally recommended for:

• Displaced fractures (where bone ends are not aligned)

• Open fractures (where bone has pierced the skin, increasing infection risk)

• Unstable fractures that will not heal properly with splinting or casting

• Joint fractures, which require precise alignment for future mobility

• Fractures in active or large dogs, where non-surgical healing is less reliable

Each case is different, and our veterinary team will determine the best treatment option based on your pet’s size, age, activity level, the location and type of fracture, and overall health.

What Happens During the Consultation?

During the initial consultation, we will:

• Take a detailed history of the injury

• Perform a thorough physical exam

• Assess for additional injuries (especially after trauma)

• Take digital X-rays to evaluate the fracture’s type, location, and severity

Once we have a complete picture, we will discuss your options, including surgical and non-surgical treatments, expected outcomes, and costs. If surgery is required, we’ll schedule your pet for the procedure as soon as possible to minimize pain and prevent further damage.

What to Expect on the Day of Surgery

Surgical Admission:

• Your pet will be admitted in the morning after a period of fasting

• We’ll run pre-anaesthetic blood tests using our in-house lab to ensure they’re fit for anesthesia

• Your pet will receive pain relief, IV fluids, and general anesthesia

• The surgical team will prepare the fracture site in sterile conditions

The Surgery:

Depending on the type of fracture, we may use:

• Bone plates and screws

• Pins or rods (intramedullary fixation)

• External fixation devices

These methods stabilize the bone, allowing it to heal correctly over time. The surgical approach is chosen based on what will provide the strongest, safest, and most comfortable recovery for your pet.

Aftercare and Recovery

Post-operative care is just as important as the surgery itself. Here’s what you can expect:

• Hospital stay: Some pets go home the same day; others may stay overnight for observation and pain management.

• Pain control: Your pet will be sent home with prescribed pain relief and possibly antibiotics.

• Restricted activity: Your pet will need to be confined and kept quiet for 6–8 weeks to allow the bone to heal properly. This includes crate rest and leash walks only.

• Bandage or splint care (if applicable): We’ll provide instructions on how to care for the surgical site and dressing.

• Follow-up X-rays: These are essential to monitor healing and determine when your pet can resume normal activity.

• Rehabilitation or physiotherapy: In some cases, gentle exercises or therapy may be recommended to help restore strength and mobility.
