What is TPLO Surgery?

TPLO surgery is a specialized orthopedic procedure designed to stabilize the knee joint following a rupture of the CCL (similar to the ACL in humans). Instead of replacing the ligament, TPLO changes the biomechanics of the knee to eliminate the need for the CCL altogether.

During the procedure, the surgeon makes a curved cut in the tibia (shinbone), rotates the bone segment to change the angle of the tibial plateau, and then secures it with a metal plate and screws. This realignment stabilizes the joint, allowing your dog to walk comfortably and heal with less risk of future injury.

What to Expect: Before, During, and After TPLO Surgery

Pre-Surgical Evaluation:

Surgery Day:
Your pet will be under general anesthesia for the procedure. Most dogs go home the next day after a short recovery and monitoring period.

Post-Operative Care:
Healing from TPLO surgery is a gradual process that requires careful attention during the first 8–12 weeks. Our staff will provide detailed instructions and support throughout the recovery process.

Post-Operative Home Care Instructions

Proper home care is crucial to your dog’s recovery. Here’s what to expect after your dog returns home:

1. Restricted Activity

• Keep your dog confined to a small area (E.g. Crate) to prevent jumping, running, or rough play. It is extremely important that patients are confined to crate rest post TPLO surgery.

• Short, controlled leash walks only — start with 5–10 minutes, 2–3 times a day.

• No stairs unless absolutely necessary; use a sling or harness for support.

2. Pain Management

• Your dog will go home with prescribed pain medications and anti-inflammatories.

• Give all medications as directed, and contact us immediately if you notice signs of pain or adverse reactions.

3. Incision Care

• Keep the incision site clean and dry.

• Prevent licking or chewing with an e-collar (recovery cone).

• Monitor for signs of infection: redness, swelling, discharge, or an unpleasant odor.

4. Cold Therapy

• Apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel to the surgical site for 10–15 minutes, 2–3 times a day during the first 3–5 days post-op.

5. Physical Rehabilitation

• Light, guided physical therapy or passive range-of-motion exercises may begin within the first week under veterinary direction.

• We recommend professional rehabilitation therapy to accelerate healing and improve function.

6. Follow-Up Appointments

• Recheck appointments and follow-up x-rays are vital to monitor bone healing and determine when your dog can return to normal activity.

• Most dogs begin transitioning back to regular exercise around the 10–12 week mark.
