We’ve designed our pricing to be transparent, affordable, and all-inclusive—so you’re not caught off guard by unexpected costs later. Our surgical bundle includes:

The only item not included is post-operative sedation, which may be required. If sedation is recommended for your pet’s comfort or safety at home, we’re happy to provide an individual estimate.

Eye enucleation is the surgical removal of an eye. While this may sound daunting, it is often the kindest and most effective solution for pets suffering from painful or severely damaged eyes. Pets adapt incredibly well to life with one eye, and most experience relief, increased comfort, and an improved quality of life following surgery.

What Is Eye Enucleation and When Is It Needed?

Eye enucleation involves the complete removal of the eyeball and associated tissues. It is typically recommended when the eye is:

• Painful and no longer functional

• Irreversibly blind and causing ongoing issues

• A source of chronic infection, pressure, or inflammation

• Affected by severe trauma or rupture

• Infected with cancerous growths or tumors

• Suffering from advanced glaucoma that is unresponsive to medication

If the eye is causing pain or posing a risk to your pet’s overall health, removal is often the best course of action.

Why Eye Enucleation Is Recommended

Pets can thrive with one healthy eye—or even without vision entirely—if it means they are no longer in pain. Eye enucleation may be recommended when:

• Medical treatment is no longer effective

• The eye is beyond repair due to trauma, infection, or disease

• The condition is negatively impacting your pet’s quality of life

• There’s a risk of spreading cancer or infection from the affected eye

In these cases, removing the eye is not a cosmetic issue—it’s a medical necessity that relieves suffering and prevents further complications.

What to Expect: From Consultation to Recovery

1. Consultation and Diagnosis

During your consultation, our veterinary team will:

• Perform a thorough examination of the affected eye(s)

• Discuss your pet’s symptoms, history, and current medications

• Use fluorescein stain (if needed) 

• Review treatment history and evaluate whether surgery is the best option

We will talk you through the procedure, recovery, and expected outcomes, ensuring you're fully informed and comfortable with the plan.

2. Surgical Admission and Procedure

On the day of surgery:

• Your pet will be admitted after fasting overnight

• Pre-anaesthetic bloodwork may be performed to ensure safety under anesthesia

• Your pet will be placed under general anesthesia, and given IV fluids, antibiotics, and pain management

• The affected eye and surrounding tissue will be surgically removed

• The eyelid is then permanently closed, resulting in a smooth, closed appearance

This procedure typically takes around 1 hour, and your pet may stay with us for observation post-operatively.

3. Post-Operative Care and Recovery

After surgery, your pet will go home with:

• Pain relief and anti-inflammatory medications

• Antibiotics (if required)

• An Elizabethan collar (cone) to prevent rubbing or scratching

• Instructions for incision care and activity restriction

A follow-up appointment is usually scheduled 10–14 days later to check healing and remove any sutures, if used. Most pets recover quickly and comfortably, and owners often notice their pet is happier, more relaxed, and more active once the source of pain is gone.

What Will My Pet Look Like After Surgery?

After healing, the area where the eye was will appear as a closed eyelid with a slight depression. While the look may take some getting used to, it’s important to remember that:

• Your pet will be free from pain

• Their confidence and behavior will usually improve significantly

• Most pets quickly adapt, even with limited or no vision

Some owners choose to have the site sutured with a black silicone prosthesis (“orbital implant”) for a more natural look, and we can discuss this option if appropriate.
