Dental health is vital to a horse’s overall wellbeing, comfort, and performance. While routine dental maintenance can address many issues, some dental conditions require more advanced treatment—including tooth extractions.
We offer professional equine dental extractions in a safe, controlled environment using specialised equipment and facilities. Whether due to infection, trauma, or advanced dental disease, our experienced veterinary team is here to ensure your horse receives the best care possible.
What Are Equine Dental Extractions?
Dental extraction is the surgical or mechanical removal of a tooth that is no longer healthy or functional. Horses have large, complex cheek teeth, and removing one—especially if it is diseased or fractured—requires careful planning and skilled execution.
Tooth extractions may be required for:
-
Fractured teeth
-
Severe tooth decay or infection
-
Periodontal disease
-
Impacted or retained teeth
-
Tooth root abscesses
-
Loose or displaced teeth
Left untreated, dental issues can lead to chronic pain, sinus infections, difficulty eating, weight loss, and behavioural changes.
Why We Perform Extractions In-Clinic Only
Due to the complexity and equipment involved, all dental extractions are performed in-clinic only. This allows us to provide a safe and fully equipped environment for both the horse and our veterinary team.
Our clinic features:
-
✅ Purpose-built equine yards for easy and safe movement of horses
-
✅ Secure stables for pre- and post-procedure care
-
✅ A vet crush (stocks) designed specifically for equine procedures, ensuring stability and safety during dental work
-
✅ Sedation and pain management protocols tailored to your horse
-
✅ Advanced dental and imaging tools for precise diagnosis and treatment
These facilities are essential to safely perform extractions—especially in cases involving deeply rooted teeth, fractured crowns, or sinus involvement.
What to Expect: From Consultation to Recovery
Initial Examination
Your horse will undergo a full dental examination, which may include:
-
An oral exam using a dental speculum and light
-
Radiographs (X-rays) to assess tooth roots and any surrounding bone or sinus involvement
Once a problem tooth is identified, we’ll discuss whether extraction is necessary and outline the surgical approach.
On the Day of the Extraction
-
Your horse will be admitted to the clinic and sedated for the procedure
-
The affected tooth will be extracted using appropriate techniques (oral, sectioning, or surgical)
-
Pain relief, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics will be administered as needed
-
The site will be cleaned and packed if required to prevent infection
Some extractions are straightforward and completed quickly, while others—particularly cheek teeth—can be more complex and time-consuming.
Aftercare and Recovery
After the extraction, your horse may need:
-
A short stay at our practice for monitoring
-
Softened feed for a few days to ease chewing
-
Rinsing or flushing of the socket at home (we will demonstrate how)
-
Follow-up visits to check healing and remove packing if used
Most horses return to normal eating and behaviour quickly and experience significant relief from dental discomfort.
